41-foot Christmas tree installed downtown Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- It's a sure sign the holidays are near as a 41-foot Christmas tree has been installed downtown Grand Rapids.

The tree was installed early Tuesday at Rosa Parks Circle.

Rockford Construction and the City of Grand Rapids brought the 41-foot tree from Manton to Grand Rapids.

This kicks off the beginning of holiday traditions downtown, including the opening of the ice rink at Rosa Parks Circle this Friday at 3 p.m.

The annual tree lighting ceremony is planned for Friday, December 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

I’m sure the tree will be beautiful and Grand Rapids will be all decked out for the holidays. I can’t help but wonder about the homeless that see all this beautiful stuff and have nowhere or no one to share it with. I find it odd that our City seemingly can go on as if they don’t exist as if there’s no families that can’t even afford to have a tree and yet in our city is a 41 foot tree with lights and people shopping all around. Sure, the holidays are for everyone and yet is the very few that can afford it all. How do you choose between heating your house and giving your child the simplest of gifts or gift even. In my household it will be a bare Christmas but there are so many that are worse off than we are. I hope Grand Rapids wakes up. I hope it doesn’t become another city that just ignores the homeless … the Working Poor … disabled and the mentally ill … but I’ve lost my faith in Grand Rapids.

Donna, are you familiar with the song ‘Pretty Ribbons of Blue’? A lot of people can’t believe that it was written by Willie Nelson and sung by Roy Orbison., but it was. Maybe their thinking was much the same as yours.

The Limousine Liberals strike again! Global Warming/Climate Change a TOP political issue, and they cut down a tree. A tree that is needed to save the planet! Way to go Bliss, you have just proven that whole argument is Crapola.
